Sentencing of John Garner

Teresa Garner was 46 when she was brutally murdered on October 24th 2018 at her home address in Penyffordd, Holywell, by her partner John Garner. He has today been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Detective Inspector Chris Bell said: “Today John Garner has been found guilty of the brutal murder of Teresa Garner, which occurred on Wednesday 24th October 2018 at Llys Dewi, Penyffordd, Holywell. The events of that morning changed the lives of so many people, none more so than her children Kim aged 17, Rhys aged 11 and Lewis aged 10.”

“I extend my sincere sympathies to Kim, Rhys and Lewis and commend them on the way they have conducted themselves throughout this investigation. I cannot imagine how hard it has been for them to try and come to terms with the loss of their much loved mother at the hands of somebody close to them. Somebody, they should have been able to trust and rely on.”

“Their lives have been turned upside down as a result of the tragic events of that day. They have not only lost their mother, they have lost their home. All of which has resulted in them living apart from each other. These are the harsh consequences of the selfish act of John Garner.”

“Sadly nothing will ever bring Teresa back but I hope that today’s sentence will bring some degree of closure to the friends and family of Teresa “

“John Garner tried to convince the court that he was not guilty of Teresa murder by using the defence of diminished responsibility. Having listened to the evidence over the last few days the jury have quite rightly found him guilty of murder and he will now spend the next 22 years in prison where he rightly belongs.”

“Together with the Crown Prosecution Service I would like to thank those people who stepped forward and assisted my team with the investigation but in particular my thanks to the family for their bravery, fortitude and dignity during the whole of this investigation and court process.”

“It is totally unacceptable that in the UK two women a week are killed at the hands of a partner or ex-partner.  We all need to continue to raise awareness in helping reduce and eradicate all forms of domestic violence and will work with our partners to break this cycle of destruction.

“I would encourage anyone who finds themselves in an abusive relationship to seek the support that is available. We will robustly investigate domestic abuse, bringing offenders to justice and fully support the victims.”

Statement from the family of Teresa Garner

I am Rhys Garner and am I am 12 years old.  I have an older sister Kim who is 17 and a younger brother Lewis who is 11.

“We would like to say how the death of our mother, Teresa , and her being taken away from us has affected our lives.

“We miss our mum every day she was a lovely mum.  When we all left for school and college that day we had no idea that we wouldn’t see her alive again.

John Garner has taken our mum from us in a horrible way and we hate him for that. We can’t stop thinking about what happened and we are so angry with him. If we had one wish it would be to have her back with us.   We miss her so much.”

“Mum’s death has meant that we have had to leave our home. We have no one else to live with so me and Lewis are in foster care a long way from where we lived, we are not with Kim anymore as she is living with her dad. It’s been very upsetting getting split up.”

Everything changed for us on 24th October 2018. Our lives will never be the same again because we have to live them without our mum.”
