Doors Open To Conwy And Gwynedd's Architectural Treasures

A number of historical buildings, gardens, interesting and unusual locations throughout Conwy and Gwynedd will be open to the public for free this September.
As part of CADW’s 'Open Doors' scheme, more than 50 buildings across Conwy and Gwynedd will open their doors to the public as part of an annual programme that celebrates Wales’ architectural heritage.
Throughout September, events and activities will be held at locations across both counties with opportunities for local residents and visitors to get a taste of the area’s history and heritage. This year the programme is welcoming an exciting Heritage Lottery re-development project at Penmaenmawr Museum. Opening their newly refurbished exhibition and café area, the independent museum explores the Neolithic and Bronze Age worlds of the locality and the hardship felt by the quarry workers and families in the Victorian era.
Councillor Mark Baker, Conwy Council's Cabinet Member said:
“Open Doors is a fantastic opportunity to get out and explore the best our two counties have to offer in architectural heritage. From historic churches and museums to gardens and castles, there is something for everyone. The programme offers a great, free day out for all the family, and really showcases the contribution that our heritage makes to the visitor experience in Conwy and Gwynedd”.
Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development said:
“As part of Open Doors, there will also be an opportunity to celebrate the rich slate industry heritage of Gwynedd with events at some of the most iconic sites included in the Wales Slate World Heritage Site nomination. It will also provide a rare opportunity to see one of the only slate carrying inclines in the world at work at the National Slate Museum in Llanberis”.
Details about the attractions that will be open as part of 'Open Doors' have been published in a leaflet jointly produced by Conwy County Borough Council and Gwynedd Council. Copies are available from Tourist Information Centres and heritage sites across Conwy and Gwynedd.
