Info For Retailers On Minimum Alcohol Pricing Law

Thursday 28th Mar 2024

Retailers and consumers in Denbighshire are being reminded of a new law coming into effect on March 2, which will see the start of minimum alcohol pricing in Wales.

All retailers will need to charge at least 50 pence a unit of alcohol. The Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) (Wales) Act 2018 will mean that it will be an offence for alcohol to be supplied below that price in Wales. A fixed penalty notice could be issued to any retailer found not to be complying with the new law.

The new law supports the Welsh Government’s comprehensive work to tackle harmful and hazardous drinking by tackling the availability and affordability of cheap, strong alcohol, which is part of wider efforts to improve and protect the health of the population of Wales.

Councillor Mark Young, Cabinet Lead Member for Planning, Public Protection and Safer Communities, said: “The Welsh Government has launched a nationwide information campaign to inform people about the changes coming into effect on March 2nd this year.

“In Denbighshire we want to make sure that all retailers know their duties and don’t fall foul of the new law.

“The Act places an emphasis on all local authorities to consider what kind of enforcement action it will carry out, with a focus on improving public health and protecting children from harm.

“We want to work with all retailers to make sure they adhere to the regulations and don’t face enforcement action”.
