Old Colwyn Promenade Reopens

Old Colwyn promenade is now fully open after 6 months of work to improve the sea defences and active travel route at Splash Point (by Old Colwyn Arches).
The Conwy County Borough Council project included installing a rock barricade to protect the vulnerable Victorian seawall at the eastern end of the promenade. The rocks absorb and disperse wave energy to protect the promenade behind it. The promenade had previously been damaged in storms, putting the A55 and national railway bridges at risk from future severe weather.
The £1.6m project, funded by Welsh Government, also included improvements to the active travel route, shared by pedestrians and cyclists.
“We’ve improved the beach access ramp and put a priority crossing in place, as well as installing new bicycle parking and a repair station for cyclists,” said Cllr Greg Robbins, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation. “The scheme also includes disabled parking. There’s some finishing touches, including lampposts and benches, which will be done in the next few weeks. Delivery has been delayed due to Covid-19, but we didn’t want residents to have to wait any longer to get access to the promenade. We’d like to thank the local community for their patience while we’ve carried out this work.”
Last month, the Council announced it had secured a further £6.075m funding from Welsh Government to continue work on the Old Colwyn coastal defence scheme. The additional funding is part of Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads fund, which supports recovery from the effect of storms and improves routes for pedestrians and cyclists. This additional money will allow the Council to extend the costal defences and promenade improvements west towards Porth Eirias.
