Denbighshire County Council is delighted that two of the county’s beaches have been honoured in this year’s prestigious Wales Coast Awards.

The Awards are run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy and recognise those beaches that meet stringent quality standards.

In Denbighshire, Prestatyn Beach retains its Blue Flag status. It is one of 44 blue flag locations in Wales.  For three decades, the Blue Flag programme, which is owned by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), has had a transformational impact on water quality, environmental awareness, protection, safety and services. During this time, it has become a world-renowned eco-label with more than 4,400 award-winning sites in 45 countries.

Rhyl Central Beach also keeps its Seaside Award. This award is a national standard for the best beaches across the UK. 40 beaches have been awarded this honour in 2019.  While Seaside Award beaches can be vastly different, the flag is a symbol of quality which ensures visitors are guaranteed to find a clean, attractive and well managed coastal stretch.

Emlyn Jones, Denbighshire’s Head of Planning and Public Protection, said: “We are proud of our beaches in Denbighshire. They are amongst the best in the country and they have been recognised for their  quality.  We work closely with our partners to maintain the quality of our beaches and waters and it’s great news that residents have award winning beaches right on their doorstep, as well as great news for visitors coming to the Denbighshire coast for day trips and holidays.

“To receive national recognition for quality is a testament to the hard work being carried out by the Council, its partners and the local community in keeping our beaches safe and clean. Above all, we want to make sure that local residents and visitors have the best possible experience”.
