Waterfront Project Award

The Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project is celebrating its latest Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The annual ICE Wales Cymru Awards celebrate outstanding engineering achievement across the country. Phase 2 of the Waterfront Project received the Bill Ward Sustainability Award 2019 at the Award ceremony held on 14 June. The Award was given in recognition of the project’s commitment to identifying and implementing sustainable design solutions and construction practices.
The work on Phase 2 of the project included the regeneration of just under 1km of the promenade between the Pier site and the Cayley Embankment, including the construction of a new concession building and the Colwyn feature lettering. The Project was able to implement innovative recycling processes which significantly reduced the amount of waste leaving the site to landfill. Recycled materials were specified and used where possible and waste on site was carefully sorted to minimise the amount going to landfill.
Cllr Greg Robbins, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation said, “I’m very pleased to see the Waterfront Project recognised with this award for the sustainable approach to work on Phase 2 of the development. The refurbished promenade is an asset for residents and tourists, providing coast protection and regeneration benefits for the town.”
Phase 1 of the Waterfront Project also received the Award in 2017.
Finance for Phase 2 amounted to approximately £5m in total which was secured from various funding streams including Welsh Government Vibrant and Viable Places, Targeted Match Funding, European Regeneration Funding and Conwy County Borough Council.
