Safer Internet Day 2020

Safer Internet Day 2020

Thursday 28th Mar 2024

We are supporting Safer Internet Day again this year which is being celebrated today (Tuesday 11th February). This is an international initiative celebrated by over 150 countries worldwide in an aim to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

Each year, Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues by choosing a theme to reflect current concerns. This year’s theme is “Free to be” which encourages young people to think about their online identity, and how the internet shapes how they think of themselves and others.

Digital technologies provide a world of possibilities with opportunities to learn, participate and create. But the internet also opens up risks such as privacy concerns, cyber bullying and exposure to potentially harmful content. By working “together for a better internet” we can all help to achieve a safe online environment for children and young people.

Safer Internet Day aims to start a national conversation about using technology responsibly and respectfully to create an inclusive internet for everyone. The UK Safer Internet Centre have created resources online to help to start conversations about how to promote the safe and positive use of the internet for young people which will be shared on social media throughout the day using hashtags #SaferInternetDay, #SID2020 and #Freetobe.

Learn more about how everyone can play a part in promoting a safe and inclusive internet on the UK Safer Internet Centre website.

We will be sharing messages about Safer Internet day on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts today, have a look and get involved in the conversation by tagging us in your posts.
