Conwy County Borough Council is asking the public to choose names for their fleet of gritters.

A call for ideas in January saw more than 450 names suggested by members of the public via the Council’s website and social media.

A judging panel, including winter works staff, has whittled this down to a shortlist of 50. Now the Council is asking for the public’s help in voting for their favourite names on the Council’s website: www.conwy.gov.uk/nameourgritters

Cllr Greg Robbins, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation said: "We got some really creative, funny suggestions from residents, including some with local connections. The judging panel had a tough job choosing the final shortlist and we’d like to thank everyone who took the time to suggest a name. Now we’re asking residents to help us again to choose the final 13 names for our gritters.

The gritters and our drivers have been working around the clock in the recent snow to keep our priority routes clear, so this feels like an appropriate time to name the vehicles officially.”

The Council has 13 gritter trucks which are on standby 24/7 between October and April to spread rock salt and plough snow. The trucks are deployed on First Priority Routes which cover a third of the county’s roads, including main traffic and bus routes and routes for the emergency services.

The gritter names will be added to the Council’s new tracking system, which will allow residents to see gritter locations in real time, via the Council’s website.
