Conwy County Borough Council Marks Srebrenica Memorial Week

Thursday 25th Apr 2024

A minute’s silence was held at a meeting of full council this morning to mark Srebrenica Memorial week.

Srebrenica Memorial Day is recognised internationally on 11 July, with Srebrenica Memorial Week this year running from the 4-11 July.

The charity ‘Remembering Srebrenica’ calls upon UK citizens to remember the victims and survivors of the Srebrenica genocide of 1995, and to learn lessons to be vigilant against hatred and intolerance.

Cllr Abdul Khan, Chair of Conwy County Borough Council, said: “We remember the spirit of the survivors of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide who, despite the horrendous hatred and destruction they were subjected to themselves, have been rebuilding their lives with dignity, humanity and without calling for retribution or promoting division or hatred. We support the Remembering Srebrenica charity 2021 theme of ‘Rebuilding Lives’ in the hope that it will bring communities together to remember and learn from the past to help build stronger, safer and more cohesive societies here in Wales.”
