Conwy Culture Centre Opens Its Doors

The brand new Conwy Culture Centre opens its doors to the public on Monday (09/12/19).
Conwy Culture Centre is home to the new Area Library (replacing libraries at Deganwy, Llandudno Junction and Conwy) and features vibrant new heritage displays filled with unique objects and pictures that tell the rich story of the county’s history.
The Centre will be open from 9.30am on the first morning and people can check out the books, visit the People of Conwy exhibition, or just call by and have look around.
The opening hours are:
Monday 09.30 - 17.00
Tuesday 10.00 - 19.00
Wednesday 09.30 - 17.00
Thursday 09.30 - 17.00
Friday 09.30 - 17.00
Saturday 10.00 - 13.00
The on-site café Cantîn will open in the New Year.
Then, in spring, the county’s Archive Service will be moving their collections into the basement (which has been specially designed to maintain constant temperature and humidity to protect delicate items) and opening the archive facilities and archive search room to the public.
The landscaped areas around the centre will include a peaceful sensory garden with dementia-friendly and accessible paths and seating.
Council Leader, Cllr Sam Rowlands, said: “This fantastic new centre brings a variety of services together under one roof. The purpose built space will help us to deliver more flexible services with longer opening hours, whilst reducing running costs.”
Cllr Mark Baker, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Heritage and Culture said: “Conwy Culture Centre will be the treasure house for our archives to preserve and protect our historic items. The centre will serve as a hub for the local community, and the gateway to the story of Conwy County.”
The Culture Centre and sensory garden are funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Conwy County Borough Council, the Welsh Government (Museums, Archives, Libraries Division), the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government, Gwynt y Môr Community Fund in partnership with Conwy Arts Trust, Arts Council Wales, LDT Communities Fund, Thomas Howell Education Fund for North Wales and the Welsh Historic Garden’s Trust.
An official opening ceremony will be arranged in spring 2020.
